Winter is an intense time of year. Temperatures are colder, daylight is shorter and getting from place to place can be much more difficult. But this time of year can also turn our rural landscapes into a wintry wonderland, and create spaces for outdoor activities you can only enjoy for a short time. Horizon Health has a few recommendations to make this season as enjoyable and safe as possible.

Travel prepared
Before heading out, check the forecast and road conditions. Keep your gas tank at least half full and carry a winter car kit with blankets, snacks, and a phone charger. If conditions worsen, it’s okay to wait it out.
Watch your footing
We’re all familiar with the Midwest penguin shuffle we use to try to stay upright. Icy steps, driveways, and work areas increase the risk of falls. Wear boots with good traction, use sand or ice melt, and take your time when doing outdoor chores. Falling on the ice can cause broken bones and concussions. Take your time when traversing icy paths.
Stay warm
Dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and taking regular breaks to warm up indoors will help you stay warm and reduce the risk of frostbite. Listen to your body’s warning signs of numbness, tingling or pale skin – these are the early signs of frostbite. Pay special attention if you have health concerns like diabetes or lowered circulation that can increase your risk.
Shovel with care
Clearing your driveway and sidewalks uses major muscle groups whose sudden action can stress the heart. Cold weather reduces the amount of blood flow to the body, which also strains the heart muscle. Try to warm up first, push snow when possible or lift with your legs, not your back. Pace yourself so as not get overexerted and stop immediately to seek medical help if you feel chest pains.
Keep your home safe
Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, use space heaters carefully, and keep flashlights handy in case of a power outage. Schedule your annual furnace inspection now to be ready for next year. Keeping your home warm, cozy and safe helps with peace of mind and literally warms the heart.
Check in on each other
Winter can feel isolating. After the togetherness of the holiday season it’s hard to face a quieter time where it’s not always possible to visit friends and neighbors. A quick call, a cleared sidewalk, or offering help with errands goes a long way, especially during extreme cold. Break up the winter doldrums by sharing a cup of coffee and a baked treat with someone you haven’t seen in a while!
