Now, she’s looking forward to providing regularly scheduled primary care medical services to the Howard area.

Originally from Howard, South Dakota, Thompson received her certification as a nurse practitioner and as a physician’s assistant from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In 2003, she graduated with a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Thompson has received many awards for her service in the medical field, including Miner County Person of the Year in 1993 and Civilian PA of the Year in 1996 from the Veterans Caucus of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. In her career, she’s gained 43 years of experience in family and emergency medicine in the Howard, Huron, and Madison communities, as well as filling in as needed at Horizon’s eastern clinics.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to Horizon Health Care and bring primary care to our rural citizens in South Dakota,” said Jean Thompson, CNP, PA-C. “Our message has been to provide access to affordable health care from the very beginning. We are committed to excellence and dedicated to the people we serve. It’s a privilege to be a part of this health care team.”

Thompson has three grown children: Heath, Misty, and Annalee. In her free time, she enjoys serving her community, spending time with grandchildren, gardening and embroidery. She will be available for appointments at Howard Community Health Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Oct. 25.
