Howard Admin Building Renamed for Former Horizon CEO

Jun 14, 2024 | Blog, Newsroom, Our Staff

[HOWARD, SD] — Horizon Health has honored its former CEO by naming the Howard headquarters the John Mengenhausen Administrative Building.

Mengenhausen retired in 2021 after leading the organization for 38 years.

“Naming our Horizon admin building after John is a way to honor his legacy of creating a cutting edge, accessible network of rural healthcare that serves some of our most remote areas and underserved patient populations,” said Horizon CEO Wade Erickson. “John dedicated his career to making sure everyone had access to the care they needed regardless of where they lived or the balance in their bank account.”

Mengenhausen was initially hired as the business manager for then-Miner-Hamlin Health Center in 1983. At that time, the organization consisted of two small clinics in Bryant and Howard and was only expected to be around for 2-3 years until federal funding expired. Over the next three decades, Mengenhausen’s role evolved to chief executive officer as he led the organization through significant growth to become South Dakota’s largest community health center and a leader in rural health care.

During Mengenhausen’s tenure as CEO, Horizon Health expanded its services and physical footprint in South Dakota, serving 22 communities with 31 service locations and a footprint of over 28,000 square miles. He oversaw numerous mergers/acquisitions and expanded Horizon’s service line to include dental care, currently delivered in eight dental clinics across the state. In 2016, Mengenhausen worked with his Board of Directors to establish the Horizon Health Foundation to build financial resources that could be used to help patients with cancer screenings, food and transportation insecurity and to make medical, dental and behavioral health care available to those who otherwise could not afford it.

Mengenhausen was integral in the early implementation of telemedicine and his commitment to technology kept the organization on the forefront of health centers in delivering quality care. Horizon can use telehealth in all locations, including dental, making it possible to offer uninterrupted care during inclement weather and provider absences. It provides behavioral health services to its patients throughout South Dakota using telehealth delivery.
