Horizon Hygienist Appointed Ambassador for National Oral Health Organization

Feb 26, 2024 | Uncategorized

(Howard, SD) – Jack Kelly, a registered dental hygienist for Horizon’s dental clinics in Yankton and Alcester, was appointed the South Dakota Ambassador for the National Network for Oral Health Access.

Ambassadors support the NNOHA mission to improve the oral health of underserved populations and contribute to their overall health through leadership, advocacy, and support to oral health providers in safety-net systems. They will be the point of contact for NNOHA in their state and region to strengthen and support the oral health safety net by conducting outreach, education, and relationship-building to potential NNOHA members.

The NNOHA website states that dental disease affects millions of Americans every day partly due to a lack of access to dental care that is affordable, available and of an adequate quality. Safety-net programs bridge this gap by providing access to care.

“I am thrilled to be the South Dakota ambassador because it allows me to further advocate for the specific needs of the communities I serve, while also giving me the opportunity to foster relationships with those in other states,” Kelly said.

The mission of NNOHA and its ambassadors aligns with that of federally qualified health centers like Horizon in providing affordable, accessible care to underserved populations and regions regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

Kelly has been a part of the Horizon network since 2017. She graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD and Rio Salado College in Tempe, Arizona. She is certified to monitor nitrous oxide and local anesthesia, as well as monitoring general, deep and moderate sedation. She is also certified as a Community Dental Health Coordinator. She uses her enthusiasm and passion for oral health to help patients find their own motivation to improve their oral health.

“Jack has been a leader in our organization, providing care to dental patients in our Southeast Region throughout her time at Horizon,” said Horizon’s Chief Dental Officer Michelle Scholtz. “It is fitting and a great benefit to the overall organization that she be recognized on a national level. We are proud to have Jack as a part of the Horizon family caring for our dental patients.”

The NNOHA is the largest group of safety-net oral health practitioners in the country. Its members share a commitment to increasing access to quality oral health care for underserved populations. It is committed to providing the highest quality resources and support designed to meet the unique needs of its members and programs, according to
