Horizon celebrates ribbon cutting for Plankinton clinics

Mar 5, 2024 | Blog, Newsroom

(Plankinton, SD) – The recently renovated and expanded Horizon Aurora County Community Health Center and Dental Clinic was finished officially in December. Horizon will celebrate this significant investment in the Plankinton community with a ribbon cutting and open house.

The event is scheduled for March 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the clinic. The event will start with a light lunch and beverages followed by a program, ribbon cutting and clinic tours. District 21 Senator Erin Tobin will be the keynote speaker.

“This event is the culmination of a multi-year effort to expand our medical and dental practices in Plankinton and fulfill a promise to the community that Horizon is committed to the health and wellness of its residents for years to come,” said Horizon CEO Wade Erickson.

Construction started in 2022 to begin the process of adding 5,490 square feet of space to the original facility, including 6 medical exam rooms, a patient intake room, IV room, procedure room, X-ray room, and 6 dental exam rooms. This allows for expanded hours at

the dental clinic. A space was included for Lewis Drug Pharmacy to bring full time pharmacy access to the community making the facility a one-stop shop for health care.

“Being able to have our medical clinic and pharmacy in one building has provided great convenience for our community in the last several months,” said Horizon provider Alyssa Hofer, CNP.  “I am excited for our dental clinic to provide comprehensive care to our patients.”

Access to health care services for those living in small rural communities in states like South Dakota continues to be a concern. Horizon’s mission is to guarantee people have no problem receiving the care they need.

“Horizon is a part of the fabric of the communities it serves,” Erickson said. “We want to continue to grow our abilities to care for our friends and neighbors. This clinic will allow us to do that for a larger patient population.”

Benefactors committed to the renovation with their investment into the project. Many committed gifts to help with the purchase of new equipment while others contributed with naming investments. Carol Grode-Hanks shared her financial resources to honor the memory of her husband Dave. The staff breakroom is named for him. Other rooms were named for Farmers & Merchants State Bank in memory of Hershell Page, Heartland Energy and Plankinton Development Corporation.

The new facility is already making a difference in the day-to-day life of the clinic.

“How great is it that we are able to provide a brand-new facility to Plankinton and the surrounding communities,” Horizon provider McKenzie Bormann, PA-C, ATC, said. “Having medical, dental, and pharmacy all under one roof is allowing us to take care of the whole patient in one convenient location.”

Please join us in celebrating your community and our continued partnership on March 12.
