South Dakota is expected to have one of the highest healthcare worker shortages of all 50 states by 2030. Without healthcare workers, Horizon’s clinic doors would shut within many of our communities. If there was no healthcare for families, it would have a devastating effect.

Recruitment & Retention
THE FUND FOR MEDICAL EXCELLENCE
Endowment: $5M
Annual Gift: $200,000/year
The Fund for Medical Excellence ensures Horizon keeps pace with the rapidly changing healthcare environment and anticipating the communities’ needs by assisting Horizon in the recruitment and retention of medical professionals in rural and frontier communities.
THE FUND FOR DENTAL EXCELLENCE
Endowment: $5M
Annual Gift: $200,000/year
Horizon Health provides dental care in 7 communities across South Dakota and sees a diverse population that may drive over two hours one way to receive dental care. The Fund for Dental Excellence ensures Horizon Health can recruit and retrain quality dental professionals in our rural communities to remove barriers to care for those in need of dental care. The Fund for Dental Excellence will assist Horizon in the recruitment and retention of dental professionals to provide access to Horizon Health Foundation supports dental care.
Professional Enrichment & Education
THE FUND FOR PROFESSIONAL ENRICHMENT AND EDUCATION
Endowment: $1.3M
Annual Gift: $50,000/year
Horizon Health understands the value of investing in continued employee education and development. Investments in this fund will help Horizon to support clinical and non-clinical employees with educational endeavors enabling them to reach their career goals.
Building a Pipeline of Healthcare Professionals
Horizon Health has identified a need to cultivate a high-quality and diverse workforce by engaging individuals interested in pursuing careers in health care at an early stage in high school and continuing throughout their post-secondary education.
KEEPING COMMUNITIES WELL SCHOLARSHIP
Endowment: $230,000
Annual Gift: $9,000/year
The purpose of this scholarship is to support local individuals from the communities/counties served by Horizon Health that are pursuing a degree in the health care field.
ROOTED IN RURAL COMMITMENT SCHOLARSHIP
Endowment: $1.3M
Annual Gift: $50,000/year
The purpose of this scholarship is to continue to grow the number of highly trained health professionals interested in delivering rural health care by supporting their education journey. The recipient must commit to work at Horizon Health location for a determined amount of time following graduation. This fund will allow Horizon to partner with the Build Dakota Scholarship program and the technical colleges in South Dakota.
