(ALCESTER, SD) – Horizon Health Care, Inc. (Horizon) is pleased to welcome Karen Pearson, PA-C, back to the Alcester Community Health Center. Pearson joins provider Dr. Meghan Curry O’Connell, MD, MPH, to provide primary care medical services to the Alcester community.

Pearson attended the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1991 with an Associate’s degree in Nursing. She then received a certificate in Physician Assistant Studies in 1997 from the University of South Dakota. She has previously provided care at Alcester Community Health Center through allPOINTS Health Services.

“I am looking forward to coming back to the Alcester community to care for “my people” again. I have missed walking through life events with my patients and being there for them in their time of need,” said Pearson.

Karen, who is a long-time Alcester community resident, has three daughters and three grandchildren. Her husband, Dale, works for the City of Alcester. In her spare time, she enjoys going to sporting events and watching her family compete. She is currently available for appointments at Alcester Community Health Center.

Darcie Schmidt, CNP, FNP-BC, Joins Jerauld County Community Health Center

(WESSINGTON SPRINGS, SD) – Horizon Health Care, Inc. (Horizon) is pleased to introduce Darcie Schmidt, CNP, FNP-BC, as the newest medical provider at Jerauld County Community Health Center. Schmidt joins providers Dr. Lance Lim, MD, Dr. Thomas Dean, MD, Meghan Torgerson, CNP, and Francoise Bansenga, FNP-BC, to provide primary care medical services at Jerauld County Community Health Center.

Schmidt attended South Dakota State University, graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and again in 2011 with a Master’s of Science degree in Nursing. Darcie, a Mount Vernon, SD native, is excited to provide care to the Wessington Springs Community.

“I believe that I am in a partnership with my patients to help them be in the best health they can be. We will always work together to come up with a plan of care to suit the patient’s needs and wishes,” said Darcie Schmidt, CNP, FNP-BC.

Darcie’s hobbies include camping and fishing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter with her husband, four children and one grandchild. In her spare time, she enjoys reading fiction novels. She is currently available for appointments at Jerauld County Community Health Center.

Rostyne attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. She later went on to attend Maryville University of St. Louis in St. Louis, MO, graduating in 2018 with a Master’s of Science in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner.

“I believe that everyone has personal health goals that are achievable,” said Katlyn Rostyne, CNP. “I hope to provide patients with education and support to meet their health care expectations.”

Originally from Huron, SD, Katlyn enjoys camping, fishing, softball and spending time with her family. She is currently available for appointment at Martin Community Health Center.

Fanning attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD, and earned an Accredited Associate’s Degree in Nursing. She later went on to attend the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND, graduating in 2009 with a Master’s of Science in Nursing. In 2013, she earned a Post Master’s Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Kaplan University.

“I am excited to be a part of the Horizon team, to learn and share my experiences,” said MaryAnn Fanning, CNP, who is currently available for appointments at Martin Community Health Center.

Originally from Martin, MaryAnn resides with her husband, Paul, who is a rancher in Bennett County. In her spare time she enjoys music, drama productions, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.

Meghan O’Connell, MD, MPH, Joins Horizon Health Care, Inc.

O’Connell attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics. She later went on to attend the University of Washington, graduating in 2010 with a Doctorate of Medicine degree, a Master in Public Health degree with a focus in Epidemiology, along with certificates in Indian Health Pathway and Underserved Pathway.

“I am excited to return to South Dakota and to serve my community,” said Dr. Meghan O’Connell, MD, MPH.
“I aim to provide high-quality, comprehensive, compassionate care to all patients in all stages of life.”

O’Connell, who is currently residing in Elk Point, joins a team of six current providers in Horizon’s southeast region communities of Elk Point, Alcester and Yankton. In her spare time, she enjoys running, biking, swimming, reading and traveling.

Friesen attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. She later went on to attend South Dakota State University, graduating in 1997 with a Master’s of Science in Nursing Degree as a Nurse Practitioner.

“My philosophy of care is to provide holistic, compassionate, quality healthcare at an affordable cost to patients of all ages,” said Catherine Friesen, CNP, who is currently available for appointments at Aberdeen Community Health Center.

Friesen, a Menno, SD native, will make her home in rural Groton. She has three children: Melissa, who lives in Africa, Matthew, a student at Portland Bible College, and Michal, an incoming high school freshman.
