Howard Farmers Co-op Invests in Colorectal Cancer Prevention for Rural South Dakotans

(HOWARD, SD) – With limited days remaining to donate to the HOPE $20,000 Match Challenge, Howard Farmers Co-op has demonstrated the “neighbors helping neighbors” mentality by joining the Horizon Health Foundation’s efforts in providing life-saving care to South Dakotans.

Horizon Health Foundation is pleased to announce a gift from Howard Farmer’s Co-op, in support of the $20,000 Match Challenge, which will benefit your South Dakota friends and neighbors who cannot afford a colonoscopy.

Howard Farmers Co-op is led by General Manager Bruce Yanish and a seven-member board of directors, who made the decision to donate to the challenge to raise awareness, while making a statement of support to their employees, customers, and everyone in our agricultural communities that have been or may be affected by colorectal cancer.

“As one of the largest employers in town, we felt that it was important to support this cause that can affect so many in our rural communities,” said Norman Andenas, Howard Farmers Co-op Board of Director. “These are our customers and neighbors that we could be helping. Anyone can suddenly find themselves without health insurance or unable to pay for their health care through some twist of fate.”

During the month of March, Creative Printing of Huron has partnered with the Horizon Health Foundation to offer this $20,000 Match Challenge. This challenge coincides with Colorectal Cancer Awareness month and all gifts made through the challenge will be directed to patients in need of a colonoscopy. “Colon cancer and colonoscopies aren’t an everyday topic of discussion, but they’re something everyone has experienced and should be talking about,” said Yanish. “Either you’ve experienced it yourself or someone you know has…this challenge is an opportunity to give a gift to spark more conversation on the topic.”

In these final days of March, individuals and businesses, have the opportunity to join Howard Farmers Co-op in making a gift to the Horizon Health Foundation in support of colorectal cancer prevention and awareness – a gift that will be matched to double the number of South Dakotans that will be touched with a potentially life-saving colonoscopy.
To join in this special opportunity to have your support make twice the difference, please visit horizonhealthfoundation.com/colon-care or call 605.772.5907 before March 31st.

Howard Community Health Center to Collect Outer Wear for Children

(HOWARD, SD) – A Mitten Tree to collect warm outer wear for children in need in the Howard area is on display in the waiting room at Howard Community Health Center. This tree was a long running project by Avera Medical Group Howard staff and has been taken over by Horizon Health Care this year.

Howard Mitten Tree 2016

Throughout the years, this project has been well supported by the community and thanks to the donations; many children in the area were gifted mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves. Families, individuals, clubs, church groups, businesses, and others are invited to purchase outerwear suitable for boys or girls, aged kindergarten through high school; the items may be brought to the clinic during business hours and hung on the Christmas tree. The goal for staff is to “fill up the tree”. Shortly after Christmas, the items will be taken to the Howard School and they will work with the teachers and staff to provide outerwear to the kids who are going outside without appropriate clothing.

“We are excited to continue this project with Horizon,” said Misty Rudebusch, PA-C. “We invite our community to join us this holiday season to bring warmth to the children of our community.”

Misty Rudebusch, PA-C, and Avera Medical Team to Join Howard Community Health Center

(HOWARD, SD) – Following Avera Health’s announcement last week that they would be ceasing operations in Howard and closing their local clinic, Horizon Health Care, Inc. (Horizon) is pleased to announce that the medical team currently employed at Howard’s Avera clinic, including Misty Rudebusch, PA-C, will be joining Horizon in the beginning of November.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the current Avera employees next month and will work to ensure a seamless transition for patients,” said John Mengenhausen, Horizon CEO. “Misty and her team have been trusted health care professionals and formed numerous relationships over the years in this community, so it is a huge benefit for everyone to have them continue providing care locally.”
Rudebusch will be joining current medical providers, Amy Noonan, NP-C, and Lori Kollman, RN, PA-C, to continue providing quality care to the Howard area. Horizon plans to expand the hours of service at the medical clinic, with the addition of the latest staff. These hours will be announced in the coming weeks.
“Ensuring access to quality health care is integral for small, rural communities such as Howard and we are looking forward to continuing to provide quality care to this community and the surrounding area for many years to come,” said Mengenhausen. The new Horizon staff will begin providing services at Howard Community Health Center on Monday, November 7th.
